Liverpool wanted Steven Gerrard gone earlier, says Michael Owen
Until he left the team based on Michael Owen, liverpool wanted rid of Steven Gerrard.
Boyhood Liverpool fan Gerrard graduated after Owen only in the club’s academy, signing a professional deal 11 months later his was signed by Owen.
Owen left together with Gerrard resisting interest to stay at Anfield that summer in 2004, for Real Madrid.
Owen believes the Liverpool skipper had been forced to depart for pastures new, although gerrard left LA Galaxy more than a decade later.
“In Steven’s case, I seriously doubt whether he actually wanted to go and perform in the States at 2015,” Owen wrote in his new autobiography Reboot.
“I’ve heard that the team wanted him out two years prior to when he really left.
“I am sure he would rather have wound down his career in Liverpool, playing increasingly fewer games before he reached a point where he could be incorporated into the coaching staff.
“This only happened after in his case. But because he would become so symbolic and so strong, I believe he was forced out at the brief term. Steven was bigger than the club.”
